Despite ranking as the happiest prefecture in Japan, Fukui remains off the radar of most international visitors. It’s often overlooked in favor of nearby hotspots like Kanazawa and Kyoto, which is a real shame. JR West has extended the Hokuriku Shinkansen line from Tokyo past Kanazawa into Fukui, making the coastal prefecture a must-add to your itinerary.
