Places to Go: Southern Higashiyama
Home to several geisha districts, the Southern Higashiyama area is famous among those looking to catch a glimpse of the lovely women who keep Kyoto?s traditional arts and culture alive through their trade. The area has been remarkably preserved throughout the years and is home to many longstanding shops and craftsmen. The traditional shops lining the Shirakawa River are especially pleasant to the eye and the more elusive narrow backstreets with small, narrow stores and restaurants really capture the two contrasting images of traditional Kyoto. Home to the Minami-za kabuki theater as well as the famous Yasaka Shrine and Kennin-ji Temple, you can enjoy shopping, eating, pilgrimages, or trying to catch a glimpse of an elusive geisha.
