Kyoto Festival: 300 Years of Tanukidani Fud? My???
Tanukidani-san Fud?-in, a temple that is known for its strong tradition of ascetic nature worship, is located in northeastern Kyoto overlooking the city from Mt. Ury?. In the 13th century, an emperor had a statue of Fud? My???, Buddhism?s Immovable Wisdom King, installed in a cave here, and over the years it was tended by local people until Tanukidani-san Fud?-in?s founder, Saint Mojukiji, heard tale of it and came to the to the mountain in the year 1718 to further his ascetic training. To honor the original Fud? My??? he carved a new one in its image, and now, in 2018, the temple is celebrating the statue?s 300 year anniversary. Join us at Tanukidani-san Fud?-in, where Discover Kyoto had the privilege of attending the anniversary celebration?s opening ceremony and speaking to the head priest about what three hundred years of worship means to the believers in this Fud? My???.
