Osaka (?? ?, ‘?saka-shi’) is the third largest city in Japan with a population of 2.7 million. However, during working hours, the population is only surpassed in the country for Tokyo. It is located on the main island of Honshu (??, Honshu), at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay. The city is one of the most important ports and industrial centers of Japan and the capital of Osaka Prefecture (?? ?, ?saka-fu). It is part of the Kansai region and is the core of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area has a population of 17,510,000 inhabitants.Osaka city was originally named Naniwa (? ?), and appears in Japanese historical documents. Emperor Kotoku made the area his capital, and named it Naniwa-no-miya (Palace of Naniwa). The duration of this capital was from 652-655.Osaka is divided into North (?, kita) and South sections (?, minami). The commercial district of Umeda area (??) is located in the north, while the entertainment area around Dotonbori Bridge (? ? ? ?, d?tonboribashi) to Namba, south of the city. Southern also houses Shinsaibashi shopping malls and Tenjinbashi.
