Saving money in Japan: eating and drinking
I am still surprised often by quite how reasonable eating out can be in Tokyo. Of course, if you want to go for 30,000 yen ($278, £175) sushi at a restaurant that has featured in its own film and that you can only book several months in advance, you can, and the experience will surely be memorable.

But you can also eat cheaply and well for a few thousand yen a day or less; here?s how:
Lunch deals
Lunch can often be a criminally good bargain in Japan, particularly on weekdays. Many restaurants seem to see the lunch menu as more of a chance to advertise their food than to actually make any money, in the hope that people who come for lunch will be tempted back for the more expensive evening menus, when they?ll also drink and boost profits further. The result of this is that you can eat a three-course meal for as little as 500 yen ($5, £3), as long as you have it at lunchtime. If you can eat your main mean in the early afternoon, then have something lighter in the evening, you?ll make a big saving every day. While there are too many options to list here, certain locations are good for cheap food. Anywhere busy and not too trendy will see you with plenty of options, for example Shibuya (??), Shinjuku (??), Ikebukuro (??), Ueno (??) and Shinbashi (??). The latter in particular caters to tens of thousands of ravenous office workers every weekday; anywhere that looks busy is likely to be both cheap and excellent. Look...
