Statistics
The Japanese Diet (Congress) recently revised a more than 100-year-old statute that banned women - but not men - from remarrying for 300 days following divorce.
The purpose of the statute was to prevent paternity disputes over a baby.
The revised version of Article 772 of the Japanese Civil Code, originally enacted in 1898, reduced the period from 300 to 100 days.
Under Article 772, the father of a child born within 300 days of the mother's divorce was assumed to be the former husband. Babies born more than 200 days after the mother's remarrying were presumed to be the child of the current husband.
